From the start, the whole team at Brightpurpose took the time to get to know us, the service delivery teams and the project, to ensure the evaluation met our needs. They were brilliant at working with projects on an individual basis, to tailor evaluation approaches whilst ensuring that the evaluation remained coherent at a national level. Above all, the team were incredibly knowledgeable, responsive and highly personable which made them a dream to work with!

The project brief

Co-op’s charity partnership with three mental health charities aimed to build more resilient communities across the UK. Over two years they funded a wide range of local projects, over half of them targeting children and young people. They wanted to demonstrate the difference these projects made to individuals’ self-esteem, social connection and mental wellbeing and to the resilience of communities.

There were some significant challenges with designing an evaluation to meet these needs, namely:

• All the projects were different, but the partnership needed to measure impact at a programme level, using a consistent set of measures
• There were no suitable tools already in existence to measure community level resilience

Our approach

We developed data collection systems for collecting participant outcome data from over 40 projects, offering different methods of data collection to best fit the wide range of projects being delivered across four nations. We worked closely with projects to ensure data collection processes were appropriate and manageable, taking a pragmatic and realist approach to data gathering, without compromising on quality.

We also co-created a bespoke rubric-based tool to measure community resilience, and facilitated its use with several projects. The partnership has launched this ‘Community Resilience Framework’ as a legacy of the programme for anyone to use. You can download it here.

We complemented our quantitative data collection with qualitative fieldwork with a over half of projects, to understand the factors affecting their results and to gather learning to inform future projects.

Sharing our findings

Sharing our findings

As well as producing a detailed report and infographic summary, we presented at three Learn and Share events for participating projects.

We also produced dashboards for all the participating projects, providing an infographic summary of their results and programme-wide results, to help with future business cases.

It’s time to make confident decisions about the future.
