Brightpurpose remained a calm and steady presence throughout the evaluation, with clear communication which was sensitive and considered. They were tenacious at every stage of the evaluation and were not afraid to challenge us but did this with skill and attention. We found this approach refreshing and helpful, allowing us to fully reflect and consider our actions and approach. Their attention to detail was excellent and they produced high quality reports which were well written, balanced and fair.

The project brief

ESCAPE-pain is an evidence-based pain management programme for people with arthritis-related hip and knee pain developed by the Health Innovation Network. Given its effectiveness as a programme and the high numbers of people who could benefit from it, Versus Arthritis wanted to make ESCAPE-pain available across the UK. They wanted an evaluation to gather the learning from three early implementation sites and help them understand the factors affecting successful delivery.

Our approach

We worked closely with the implementation sites, local stakeholders, the Health Innovation Network implementation team and Versus Arthritis, to identify the enablers and barriers they experienced in delivering and sustaining ESCAPE-pain. We explored the different contextual factors that could affect success, and how effectively different partners and stakeholders worked together. We also interviewed ESCAPE-pain participants, to understand why they chose to participate in ESCAPE-pain, their experience of it, and the impact it had on their physical activity levels and managing their pain.

Sharing our findings

The result

Our findings provided practical insights about the factors that the Health Innovation Network, Versus Arthritis and local organisations needed to consider to successfully implement ESCAPE-pain at scale. The Health Innovation Network grew the reach of the programme significantly, by developing an accredited training programme for health professionals and exercise professionals to learn how to deliver the programme in their different settings. As of 2020, ESCAPE-pain was available in 265 centres, over 1,100 facilitators had been trained to deliver the programme and over 15,000 people had participated in the programme.

It’s time to make confident decisions about the future.
